What are the advantages of dental implants?

One of the reasons people choose implants is that they’re a more permanent option than dentures. So long as you care for your implant properly, they can last as long as natural teeth. Dentures tend to last for around five to 10 years. And as they’re made to fit your mouth exactly, they can become less comfortable as your mouth changes shape over time.

Implants may also be a preferred option if you want to avoid causing any damage to your existing teeth. This can happen if you have a bridge, as sometimes it can mean cutting your natural teeth to fit them.

Are there any alternatives to dental implants?

A dental implant is not the only way to replace missing teeth – there are several other solutions that can be provided by your general dentist or specialist. These include:

  • Full or partial dentures – false teeth attached to a removable metal or plastic framework
  • Bridges – false teeth that are fixed onto the existing teeth either side of the gap

An implant isn’t the right option for everybody. It can depend on many things, including which teeth are missing, and the condition of your remaining teeth and gums. People might choose to have bridges or dentures because it is a less complicated procedure than implants. If there is a lack of bone to place implants complex bone grafts may be required.

Can anyone have dental implants?

Dental implants are suitable for most adults who are in good general health and have healthy gums. They are not suitable for children and young people under 18 because the underlying bones are still growing.

Dental implants may not be recommended if you are at higher risk of implant failure or complications. The following factors are important to consider:

  • Smoking status
  • A history of radiotherapy to your jaw
  • Poorly controlled diabetes
  • A history of gum (periodontal) disease
  • Other dental disease requiring treatment (i.e. dental decay)

Is it important which dental implant brand/manufacturer is used?

There are many implant brands that are placed in the UK. Some of these companies claim to offer more cost-effective options or improved designs to improve success. It is important that any dental implants placed will have the manufacturers support in the future to repair or replace any components. Without this it can be impossible to refurbish old dental implants when required. The more established companies generally have greater clinical evidence to demonstrate their success rates in the real world. James uses Astra Tech Implant System and Xive Implant system which are both manufactured by Dentsply Sirona. These have a long standing clinical history and evidence base.

Should I get a specialist to place my dental implants?

There is no implant dentistry specialism. Some specialisms incorporate implant training such as restorative dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics and oral surgery. In the UK dental implants are placed by a wide range of dentists including general dentists and specialists. They should have undergone additional training to place dental implants. Specialists have undergone formal clinical training and examinations with the Royal College of Surgeons to become registered with the General Dental Council. It is important that your implant dentist understands both the surgical and restorative aspects to get the best outcome. You may wish to get more than one opinion on your treatment options before making a decision.

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost of treatment will depend on different factors such as how many implants you’re having and the complexity of the treatment. It may also vary based on the level experience and training your implant dentist has.  The specific cost of your treatment plan would be discussed at your initial consultation. As with all dental treatment there are associated costs in maintaining and looking after your dental implants following treatment. It is important to note that while dental implants appear to be an expensive option, they are a long-term solution, and their benefits are likely to last longer than alternatives.

How long do dental implants last?

If you look after them properly, implants can last as long as your natural teeth. It’s important to make sure you care for your implant properly to get the maximum lifespan out of it and reduce the risk of infection.

Is it painful to have dental implants placed?

Implants are fitted under local anaesthetic which numbs the mouth, so you shouldn’t feel your implant being fitted. After your surgery, you’ll likely have some pain, bruising and swelling which will probably last around a week. This is normal, and you’ll be able to go to work the day after your procedure. Your pain should ease with over-the-counter painkillers. If you’re concerned that your pain is abnormal, you should always consult your dentist.

Why might I need a bone graft before I have my implant fitted?

Dental implants are inserted directly into the jawbone so there needs to be enough bone to support the implant. If you don’t have enough, it is often possible to graft bone from animal derived sources. Dr Chesterman uses the Geistlich Bio-Oss and Bio-Gide brands. Over time these fully integrate into your own natural bone to support the implant. Occasionally, more complex grafting from your own bone is required. This may come from your chin or hip which is inserted in a separate stage prior to implant placement. Depending on the extent of the bone graft, this procedure may be carried out by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon under a general anaesthetic. In some cases implants are not possible owing to lack of bone.
